Welcome to the LISTO Family Literacy Program at Southern Oregon Child & Family Council.
The Spanish word “Listo” means bright and ready. Listo is a state of the art family literacy model. From November until June thirty families bring their children to Howard Elementary School two evenings each week.
At Listo:
Infants and toddlers build relationships with loving caregivers 3, 4, and 5 year-old Hispanic children play in a supportive preschool environment in Spanish in order to gain ready to learn skills.
Children grades K through 8 get homework tutoring and enjoy Spanish reading activities that strengthen their opportunities for success as bilingual and bicultural learners.
Parents participate in English and basic adult education classes.
Adults also have support group time which covers parenting skills, community involvement and health education.
Each week parents enjoy literacy activities with their children.
Summer field trips take Listo to places like the Jackson Pool.
The Listo Family Literacy Program offers culturally, linguistically, and developmentally appropriate activities that meet and support the educational needs of all family members.
Listo is a collaboration of Southern Oregon Head Start, Southern Oregon ESD/. ESL Program, and Rogue Community College.
Additional financial support comes from the Leightman Maxey Foundation, the Jackson Commission on Children and Families, Anna May Family Foundation, Carpenter Foundation and the Gordon Elwood Foundation.
